These Two Lovebirds Jump the Broom In Ultimate Classic Style

In wanting a classic black excellence wedding, Destiny and Devario held nothing back for their dream celebration at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture in Richmond, Virginia. They envisioned their guests dressed in all black attire while emerald green and gold shimmered throughout their wedding party and decor. It would be an event that their closest loved ones would never forget.

Destiny and Devario knew of each other during their college years at VCU, and with one little direct message on Twitter from Devario, they have been together ever since. When it came time to propose, this groom-to-be worked with friends and family to coordinate a surprise engagement at the first restaurant where they had their first date in Virginia's capital. It wasn't until he popped the big question that Destiny realized it was to be the first of her best days ever!

For their love of food and music, Devario and Destiny prioritized a great menu and fabulous tunes. These two things were a hit with their loved ones, so you know everyone had a fun time as was photographed by White Black Photography. A blend of handmade details and tradition also helped personalize this special day. To tie in their heritage, these two lovebirds literally jumped the broom at the end of their ceremony. For fellow history nerds like us, "Jumping the Broom" was an 18th century British slang term to mean "sham marriage" that then became practiced in enslaved African-American communities when they could not legally marry in the Antebellum South. The public visual symbolism announced to the couple's communities that they chose to be as close together as they could. Despite its twisted origin and thanks to Black writer Alex Haley's Roots in the 1970s, "Jumping the Broom" evolved for the better into an empowering marriage ritual for modern African-American couples to show their love, strength, and commitment to their future together. With that knowledge, you can only get emotional chills when you see Destiny and Devario's gorgeously powerful moment as newlyweds!

With a semi-naked wedding cake with gold flecks and a custom Mr. and Mrs. cake topper, simply elegant handmade table numbers, and one heckuva epic gilded sweetheart sofa, this wedding radiates in timeless love. If you're looking for style inspiration and joy-filled moments, look no further!
